Career

Murphy began his career at Drogheda United spending 4 years at the club where he was once capped for Republic of Ireland Under 21's before joining Longford Town in 2000.[1] At Longford Town, he was part of the club's successful back-to-back FAI Cup winning squads of 2003[2] and 2004[3] and their League of Ireland Cup winning squad of 2004.[4] During his successful spell at Longford Town, Murphy also went on to captain the club. Murphy departed Longford Town to sign for Shelbourne on February 27, 2007.[5] He made his league debut for Shelbourne on March 23, 2007 in a fixture against Dundalk at Tolka Park[6] and scored his first Shelbourne goal with a stunning 30 yard strike in a 1-1 draw against Wexford Youths on May 4, 2007.[7] Murphy was voted the Shelbourne Supporters Development Group's (SSDG) player of the year for the 2007 season.[8] Murphy remained with Shelbourne for the 2008 First Division season and after intense title battle with Dundalk, Shels finished runners-up losing the title in the dying seconds of the season. Following the 2008 season Murphy retired from senior football after a 14 year League of Ireland career.
